Том Лайл увидел потенциал продукта, после наблюдения за сестрой, Мэйбел, которая приводила в порядок свои обгоревшие брови с помощью вазелина и угольной пыли. Он сделал первую попытку производства в 1915 году: смешав вазелин, сажу, хлопковое и сафлоровое масла. Наносив на ресницы полученный крем, он попал в глаза Мэйбел и ей стало больно. Подумав немного, Том решил попросить профессиональной помощи у Парка-Дэвиса, производителя лекарств, чтобы тот подкорректировал его образец. Полученный продукт не содержал красящих компонентов и был назван Lash-Brow-Ine. Продукция была упакована в алюминиевые коробочки двух размеров и продавалась по почтовым заказам. На рынке уже существовали похожие продукции с похожими названиями, поэтому выбранное имя принесло позже несколько проблем. В 1917 лаборатории Maybell и Парк-Дэвис запустили новую продукцию для ресниц и бровей. Она была названа Maybelline (Mabel – имя сестры + line – часть слова вазелин) и имела два оттенка, черный и коричневый. Tom Lyle a vu le potentiel du produit après l’observation de sa sœur, Maybel, qui essayait à récupérer ses sourcils brûlées avec l’aide de la vaseline et de la poudre de charbon. Il a fait le premier essai de production en 1915 en mélangeant la vaseline, la suie, les huiles de coton et de carthame. En mettant cette crème sur ses cils, c’est allé dans les yeux de Maybel et l’a fait très mal. Après avoir réfléchi Tom a décidé de demander l’aide professionnelle de Parke-Davis, producteur de médicament, pour qu’il corrige sa formule. Le produit obtenu ne contenait pas d’ingrédient qui colore et a été appelé Lash-Brow-Ine. Ce produit a été empaqueté dans des boîtes d’aluminium de deux tailles et a été distribué par la vente par correspondance. Il y avait déjà des produits similaires avec des noms similaires sur le marché. Cela a posé quelques problèmes par la suite. En 1917 les laboratoires Maybell et Parke-Davis ont lancé un nouvel produit pour les cils et les sourcils. Elle a été appelée Maybelline (Maybel – le prénom de sa sœur et line – de vaseline) et proposait deux couleurs: noir et marron. En 1920 Tom Lyle a perdu l’appel sur la dispute au sujet de la marque déposée et ne pouvait plus utiliser le nom Lash-Brow-Ine. A partir de ce moment-là, tous les produits ont pris le nom de Maybelline. Voilà comment l’histoire de cette marque connue a commencé. Tom Lyle saw the potential of the product after watching his sister, Mabel, while she was fixing her burnt eyebrows with Vaseline and coal dust. He made the first production attempt in 1915 mixing Vaseline, carbon black, cottonseed oil and safflower oil. When Mabel put it on her eyelashes it fell into her eyes and hurt them. After some thoughts he decided to ask a professional help from a drug manufacturer, Parke-Davis, to modify his formula. The derived cream did not contain any coloring component and was named Lash-Brow-Ine. Products were packed into aluminum boxes of two sizes and sold through mail-order. There were already other similar products with similar names on the market and that’s why this name caused some difficulties later on. In 1917, Maybell Laboratories and Parke-Davis launched new product for eyelash and eyebrow. It was named “Maybelline” (Mabel – sister’s name + line – a part of Vaseline) and had two shades, black and brown. In 1920, Tom Lyle lost an appeal over a trademark dispute and could no longer use the name Lash-Brow-Ine. Since then all products took name Maybelline. This is how the story of a famous brand began.
